DJ Holt was born on December 1, 1988 and grew up in Encino, California. He graduated from Crespi Carmelite in June 2007 after playing 4 years on the high school football team.

In high school, DJ Holt rushed for 250 yards on 26 carries with six touchdowns as a senior. He was selected to the All-Far West team by SuperPrep Magazine.

DJ Holt chose to redshirt his 2007 season with the California Golden Bears.

In 2008 DJ Holt saw playing time as a reserve linebacker. He appeared in 12 of 13 games and had a game high of four tackles.
