Mitchell Schwartz was born on June 8, 1989 and grew up in Pacific Palisades, California. He graduated from Palisades Charter High School and was rated the 27th-best offensive guard in the US.

Mitchell Schwartz was academically strong. He was on the Principals Honor Roll and the Dean's List as well. He was one of the first from the class of 2007 to commit to the California Bears football team.

Mitchell Schwartz chose to redshirt his first season with the California Bears in 2007.

In 2008, he won a starting position in all 13 games as either a left or right offensive tackle. Mitchell Schwartz won the Bob Tessier Award because he was the most improved Cal Bears football team offensive lineman.
